“A sustainable company is one that creates profit while protecting the environment and improving the lives of those with whom it interacts”
--Andrew W. Savitz, The Triple Bottom Line |
A healthy respect for the planet that sustains us all is especially important for a company like The Oppenheimer Group, as the success of our business – and the produce industry as a whole – is literally planted in the earth. Aligned with our sustainability efforts, is our commitment to reducing the use of non-renewable resources, improving logistical efficiencies and introducing practical, sustainable solutions throughout our supply chain.
Starting at home, we have instituted comprehensive recycling programs in all Oppenheimer offices, installed power-saving office equipment and lighting, and upgraded to more energy-efficient transportation methods and storage facilities. We lease operational facilities along established trade routes to minimize road miles, and have realized the economies of rail transportation with Railex service. Each Railex shipment keeps about 250 trucks off the road, which greatly reduces pollution and traffic congestion.

Known for our sustainable packaging efforts, all of our Oppenheimer-brand cartons contain a minimum of 50% recycled material and are printed with water-based inks, and all of our plastic clamshell containers are recyclable. We have also taken the lead in adopting innovative packaging technologies, like fully compostable Earthcyle trays made of palm fiber and totally degradable bags and films using the EPI plastics additive. In 2007 we were rewarded for our sustainable packaging efforts with a PMA Impact Award in Sustainability with our fully compostable four-piece Earthcycle kiwifruit tray with Natureflex film. Palm fiber is a waste product produced in palm oil production. |
Our grower-partners abroad have also instituted a wide range of programs geared toward sustainable agricultural production that nurtures the environment and supports the communities in which they work.
